“Smiths” of Smithfield is the Grade II listed four-floor restaurant in the heart of Smithfield Market – London’s only working meat market.
The restaurant’s priority has always been to serve simple food made from the finest ingredients, served in a friendly way in a relaxed atmosphere.
The impressive building was lovingly restored by the “Smiths” team with architects Wells Mackereth, having stood empty for over 40 years. There’s a definitive New York feel to the overall style with plenty of open spaces, blasted brickwork, big windows and comfy leather seating. Each of the four floors has a distinctive style – food, design and atmosphere – offering pretty much something for everyone depending on mood, budget or time.
Once a field outside the city walls… the scene of jousting tournaments, executions, burning of heretics and the peasants revolt… the legendary William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered here… satirist and painter William Hogarth was born here… Smith Market… over 130 years of meat trading… in a massive hall opened in 1868 with ironwork gates, 25 foot high, 15 tons apiece, “unequalled in Britain – if not the world – for their elaborate and rich design and great size”… wrought iron, Kentish Brick and Portland Stone and great arches… no longer did livestock have to be driven to market from as far away as Scotland; instead it came by train on tracks reaching across Britain, arriving below the market… 5AM, the bell rang and the market opened… were there pubs within it’s domed towers?… still one of the biggest markets of it’s kind in Europe, now lovingly refurbished inside, restored outside… enforced with toughened glass and steel…
